The Complete Guide to Professional Supervision in Psychology (according to CPR)
Obtaining a free practice certificate as supervised practicing psychologist represents the first essential step in a psychologist's career. This guide details the entry requirements, procedural steps, process flow and completion criteria (exit from supervision) established by the Romanian College of Psychologists (CPR).
1. Conditions for entering supervision
To legally begin professional supervision activity (for example, in the specialty Clinical Psychology), the following preliminary conditions must be met cumulatively:
- University studies: Graduation with a bachelor's degree from a psychology faculty.
- Specialization studies (Master): A completed or ongoing master's program, accredited and recognized by the CPR in the desired specialty (or completion of complementary training in the case of psychotherapy/counseling).
- CPR certificate: Possession of a free practice certificate at the beginner level (practitioner under supervision) in the respective specialty.
- Legal form of professional practice: Carrying out professional activity as a psychologist in a framework approved by the CPR:
- Employee (with an individual employment contract) in a public or private institution that has a work point in the respective specialty approved by the CPR.
- Establishing your own Individual Psychology Office (IPO) or Associate Office, with the approval file submitted or approved by the CPR.
⚠️ Careful: The activity carried out in a company or institution that does not have a work point explicitly approved in the respective specialty by the CPR cannot be validated for the completion of supervision.
2. Steps to follow to start the process
Completing the bureaucratic steps correctly ensures the validity of the hours accumulated:
Step 1: Choosing a supervisor
The supervised psychologist chooses a mentor from Supervisors' Register published by the CPR. It must have the status of psychologist specialist or main and be certified as a supervisor in the exact specialty in which the supervisee works.
Step 2: Conclusion of the supervision contract
A contract is concluded between the supervising psychologist and the supervised one (or the employing institution, as the case may be). Professional supervision contract. This contract establishes the financial conditions, the obligations of the parties and the estimated schedule of meetings.
Step 3: Submitting documents to CPR
The concluded contract, together with the supervision project, must be registered in the records of the CPR territorial branch to formalize the start of the internship.
According to the regulations (CPR Council Decision no. 4/2019), the deployment parameters are strictly quantified:
- Duration: Supervision extends over a period of minimum 1 year and maximum 2 years of effective practice.
- Number of mandatory hours: It is necessary to complete a minimum number of 100 hours of supervision professional.
- Meeting frequency: Meetings are usually organized monthly, following a format minimum 4 hours per month.
- Meeting format: Meetings can be individual or in small groups (usually a maximum of 8 people), where case studies are analyzed, clinical protocols are applied, and ethical dilemmas are discussed.
Supervision is not an oppressive exam, but a mentoring partnership focused on developing fundamental skills:
- Assessment and Psychodiagnosis: Assisting the supervisee in the correct administration of psychological tests, clinical interviews and the use of scientifically validated instruments.
- Primary intervention: Guidance in developing early intervention plans, primary counseling and complex case management (risks, addictions, decompensations).
- Drafting official documents: The supervisor guides the correct development of Clinical evaluation reports, psychological opinions and psychodiagnostic profiles.
- Deontology and Ethics: Critical reflection on professional secrecy, informed consent, and managing one's own emotions or counter-transferences (professional introspection).
5. Conditions for exiting supervision (Transition to Autonomous status)
To complete the internship and request the CPR's specialized committees to move to the next level Self-employed Psychologist, the final file must contain:
- Proof of the 100 hours supervision carried out.
- Favorable final report drawn up, signed and initialed by the supervising psychologist.
- Activity portfolio: Achieving a minimum number of 5 complex clinical assessment reports (or case studies, according to the specific requirements of the committee), supervised and validated.
- Proof of seniority: Proof that the profession has been practiced for a period of at least 1 year (through REVISAL extract / certificate of employment as a psychologist OR through proof of the operation of the own CIP for one year).
- Completed master's studies: Master's degree in the specialty (if supervision was started during the studies, obtaining autonomy is conditional on presenting the master's degree).
- Current financial obligations: Proof of payment of the annual fee to the Romanian College of Psychologists.
- Continuing education credits: Accumulation of the minimum number of mandatory CPR credits during the internship year (minimum 10 credits obtained through approved courses or conferences).
