Clinical psychology is a branch of psychology that studies the psychological factors involved in health or illness, both in children and adults, focusing on promoting health through the prevention of pathology on one hand, and on the other hand, on the psychological therapy of disorders involving mental and/or affective mechanisms.
Clinical psychology allows for a comprehensive evaluation of personality traits (characteristic features, temperament, aptitudes, etc.) and coping mechanisms, both in healthy individuals and in those suffering from certain psychological disorders or conditions.
The clinical psychologist thus performs a psychological diagnosis and clinical psychological assessment, as well as general (primary) and specific psychological intervention (acquired after advanced training programs, the latter being divided into psychological counseling and psychotherapy).
Psychological diagnosis and clinical psychological assessment aim to identify how clients' minds function and possible difficulties or deviations from normality, as well as to investigate their behaviors and psychological functions, ultimately guiding them towards a specific type of psychological intervention: psychological counseling, psychotherapy, medication therapy, etc., and supporting clients in overcoming identified difficulties.
Specific activities of psychological diagnosis and clinical psychological assessment include:
cognitive assessment;
assessment of personality structure and coping mechanisms/defense mechanisms (ways of dealing with problematic situations);
behavioral assessment;
psychological assessment for adult disability classification.
The results obtained by the client are confidential and may take the form of psychological certificates attesting to mental health, aptitude, and/or, as appropriate, in the form of a psychological diagnosis and clinical psychological assessment report, respectively, a psychological profile.
Psychological assessments are conducted by appointment only, both at the office and at the client's home (in situations where they are immobilized and unable to travel).
